About World Heritage Norway

Norges Verdensarv’s purpose is to safeguard and promote the shared interests of Norway’s World Heritage Sites, and to contribute to their conservation and development in accordance with UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention and best practices. In Norway’s national World Heritage policy, the eight World Heritage Sites have been assigned the role of beacons of best practice in the management of natural and cultural heritage. Norges Verdensarv is a driving force and a key partner in this work.

Norges Verdensarv shall:

• Increase understanding of the responsibilities, obligations, and opportunities associated with World Heritage.
• Encourage professional exchange and collaboration on World Heritage issues, and serve as an arena for sharing knowledge and experience.

Norges Verdensarv works to increase public awareness of Norway’s World Heritage and functions as an open network for everyone engaged in World Heritage. Sites that are nominated and inscribed in the future may also join the network.

UNESCO’s five strategic objectives for World Heritage also form the basis of Norges Verdensarv’s work. These are: credibility, conservation, capacity-building, communication, and communities.
